Staying at difficulty 1 makes things a lot less confusing and frustrating for a first playthrough. System Shock 1 is a much harder game than 2 and later levels can get VERY frustrating especially since there is no objective logs, so sometimes you just have no idea of what to do just because you missed an audiolog or took a 2 week pause from the game. However for a first playthrough, I would highly recommend to play on difficulty 1 to all sliders (0 2 3 ) except maybe combat to 3 if you feel brave enough.
